ening with Satya  Activities for November

November is a busy month for most of us, packed with end-of-year commitments, social events and forays into Christmas. But, amongst the busy-ness, there's still room for 'green goodness' and taking time out to small the roses.

Satya's garden tip...

Lots of interesting questions surface in 'Garden consultancies' , here's one to share with my answer.

"Will I mulch before planting my fruit trees or plant then mulch."

At this moment you have bare soil.

Always complete weed removal first.

The best option is to plant your fruit trees next.

Then mulch around your trees after planting. Doing it the other way tends to get soil and mulch mixed, with some soil ending up on top of mulch instead of below.

This soil will have some weed seeds in it that germinate partially defeating one of the purposes for mulching - preventing weeds.

However if you are not intending to plant your fruit trees right away - mulch it.

You can very carefully move the mulch back to plant later, placing soil removed from the hole on a material covering the mulch as you plant.

Nature will always cover bare soil with pioneers (weeds and grasses) after the next rain if you haven't already mulched it.

However it is better to have a weed-free mulched orchard-garden minus trees after rain and deal with smaller number of weeds that come up after planting of your trees.
